THANK YOU everyone for making the 29th Delmarva a Success

29th Delmarva Paddlers Retreat is over and it was a great one. When we were assembling the combined schedule the Sunday before Delmarva, it was clear that Mike had put together a stellar class list and from the feedback so far it looks like that was pretty much a unanimous consensus. Well Done Mike!

Jannie

Anders Skin On Frame build class was a great success. Maya said it best, it was so much fun to see the other participants come through and marvel at what was being built. 7 Beautiful qajaqs left Delmarva. Plus we now have a “Delmarwa” qajaq. Not sure how the spelling got changed, but the qajaq is made of all locally harvested wood including “crooked wood” from Camp Arrowhead trees. It was a truly a community effort. Long range planning has us doing the next SOF build in 2019.

Planning is underway for next year, we turn the Big 30. Anders and Jannie have been invited back. More on that soon. Please mark your calendars for October 11 through the 14th , 2018. Look for mentor training offerings on Thursday as part of the extended stay packages. Friday sessions will be open to attendees and mentors alike.

Delmarvalous Breaking News

We just wanted everyone to know of few updates:

Anders' SOF build class is Full. We picked up the wood from the saw mill last week.

Jannie

We are pleased to announce that Jannie Heegaard will joining us as a mentor. We think she’s more of a Special Guest too. Please follow the link to her bio.

We have room left in Don Beale’s paddling making class. He needs to know very soon (like almost yesterday) your needs if you want a custom paddle blank. Don’t delay, sign up now, Please.

We’ve just received confirmation from Dogfish Brewing and Eats that the mezzanine in the brand spanking new brew pub has been reserved for our Delmarvalous Paddlers arriving Wednesday night. We are to be there by 7:00 pm sharp! We need to know who coming so we can confirm with them. They want to make sure they have enough servers.

2017 Course Descriptions

We have posted this years course descriptions. See Class Descriptions. It is early and the list is likely to be added to. Delmarva does not limit the number of Mentors who attend. We tend to be a very Mentor rich event and encourage Mentors to learn from fellow Mentors too. For the attendee it often results in very favorable mentor/student ratios. Often 2:1 or even 1:1.

At Delmarva we are striving to develop courses that take full advantage of the area’s large bodies of relatively protected salt water. We are expanding course selections in open water control of your kayak such as edging and bracing. Rolls are great but learning to avoid going over is a required skill when paddling bays and oceans. The attendee will have the opportunity to put all of the skills they have learned together in a real world open water environment.

Please come join us.

Skin on Frame Building at Delmarva

Anders will be bringing his skin on frame building class to Delmarva. The class will take place the week before the main event beginning September 30, 2017 and going through October 6th or 7th if needed. Email us if you are interested. Signup for this class closes September 10th 2017.

He is an accomplished expedition kayaker and to support his habit (and the family) Anders also builds kayaks and makes paddles in Norway. A favorite guest at Delmarva he will be at Delmarva in 2017 teaching kayaking building. We will be offering both traditional Greenland qajaqs and iqyax (aka the baidarka)

Below is one of Anders many informative videos. See more of what he does at Kajakkspesialisten (don't miss his blog) and at Norwegian Wood Paddles. Grab a beer or wine before you sit down, you won't want to stop looking at his next video.

=====A Thousand Hands Ago=====

A short film about of recalling the knowledge of long dead craftsmen.

Over the course of three days, Danish kayak builder Anders Thygesen builds an Aleutian iqyax by the shore of his local lake. He reflects on the process of learning these skills from masters whom he has never met.
